Week 3 of ADHD Awareness Month - Signs, Tips, and Solutions for ADHD and Beyond

Welcome to Week 3 of ADHD Awareness Month! This week, we’re diving into a topic that is close to my heart—understanding the signs of ADHD and other mental disabilities, sharing practical tips and solutions, and ensuring that everyone feels included. Whether you’ve recently been diagnosed, have known about your condition for years, or are simply looking to better understand and support those around you, this post is for you.

Recognizing the Signs of ADHD and Other Mental Disabilities

One of the most important steps toward living without limits is recognizing the signs of ADHD and other mental disabilities early on. ADHD is often misunderstood or goes undiagnosed, particularly in girls, and this can make it difficult for those struggling to get the support they need. Here are some signs to watch for:

  1. Inattention: Difficulty focusing, making careless mistakes, or having trouble listening during conversations or lectures.
  2. Hyperactivity: Feeling restless, fidgeting, or being unable to stay still, especially in situations that require calm.
  3. Impulsivity: Interrupting others, acting without thinking, or struggling with patience.

Mental disabilities like anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, and learning disabilities can have overlapping symptoms. It’s crucial to understand that each person’s experience is unique, and the signs can vary. If you suspect ADHD or another condition, speaking with a healthcare professional is the first step toward a diagnosis and developing a plan for success.

Tips and Solutions for Thriving with ADHD

Living with ADHD doesn’t mean living with limits! Here are some strategies that have helped me, and I hope they can be useful to you or someone you know:

  1. Establish Routines: Routines can help create a sense of stability and structure. Break down tasks into smaller, manageable steps and celebrate your progress.
  2. Use Visual Aids: Planners, calendars, and color-coded lists can be powerful tools to stay on track and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Practice Mindfulness: Simple breathing exercises or mindfulness techniques can help manage impulsivity and stress, allowing for a greater sense of calm.
  4. Find What Works for You: Every mind is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Experiment with different strategies, and don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way.

A Special Announcement: My Live Instagram Event with Braxton Kennedy Hiser

I'm excited to announce an upcoming Live Instagram event with former Miss Indiana, Braxton Kennedy Hiser, as part of our ADHD Awareness Month activities. Braxton and I have both experienced the challenges of ADHD—while I was diagnosed as a child, she faced her diagnosis as an adult. During the live, we’ll be comparing our journeys, discussing the unique experiences of being diagnosed at different stages of life, and offering hope to those who are newly navigating their ADHD.

Our goal is to show that no matter when your journey begins, you can live a life full of possibilities and purpose. We hope this conversation will provide valuable insights and support to anyone out there feeling like they’re facing this alone. You are not alone, and you can still live without limits.

Carla’s Journey: Embracing Differences with Friends

Alongside this live event, I’m thrilled to share more about my children’s book, Carla’s Journey: Embracing Differences with Friends. The book follows Carla, a young girl navigating life after being diagnosed with ADHD, inspired by my own experiences. I wanted to create a story that helps children with ADHD or other mental disabilities feel less isolated and more empowered to reach their dreams. This book is a reminder that our differences make us special and that there is no limit to what we can achieve.

As part of ADHD Awareness Month, I’m continuing to donate copies of Carla’s Journey to schools and libraries across Indiana. I hope that by sharing Carla’s story, I can help young readers recognize their own potential, no matter what challenges they face.

Let’s Continue to Spread Awareness!

Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. ADHD Awareness Month is an opportunity to break down the barriers that too often make people feel limited or misunderstood. I believe that with the right tools, support, and mindset, we can all live a life full of possibilities.

Stay tuned for more updates, and don’t forget to join Braxton and me for our Live Instagram event! Let’s continue to spread the message that we are all capable of living without limits, together.
